Why Art and Design is important.
Art and Design is a valued part of the curriculum at Haimo Primary School as it provides a means of engaging, inspiring and challenging pupils. At Haimo Primary School, we believe that children should be equipped with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. We aim to inspire pupils as art allows them to interact with the world around them and express themselves creatively. Art and Design has been linked to having a positive effect on mental health. Our pupils benefit from this as it offers them stress relief, relaxation and an opportunity for self-expression.
How our Art and Design curriculum is designed.
We follow the Nation Curriculum for Art and Design. Pupils are taught Art and Design in a way that ensures progression of skills and follows a sequence to build on previous learning. Pupils gain experience and skills of a wide range of formal elements of art in a way that will enhance their learning opportunities, enabling them to use art and design across a range of subjects to be creative and solve problems, ensuring they make progress.
How children learn Art and Design at Haimo.
We encourage children to learn about how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation. The Art and Design curriculum will contribute to children’s personal development in creativity, independence, judgement and self-reflection. This would be seen in them being able to talk confidently about their work, and sharing their work with others. Through the study of Art and Design we aim to enable pupils to produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences. They learn to become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques. They develop their skills in evaluating and analysing creative works using the language of art, craft and design. They learn about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
